RELEASE DATE: Dec. 11, 2019

CNC hosting Camp and Catering Associate Certificate program

Fort St. James – The College of New Caledonia’s (CNC) Nechako – Fort St. James campus has received funding, in partnership with the Fort St. James Chamber of Commerce, through the Canada-British Columbia Workforce Development Agreement under the Community Workforce Response Grant/Community Response Stream to host two cohorts of the Camp and Catering Associate Certificate program in 2020.

The Camp and Catering program prepares students for work in a camp or kitchen setting while also teaching valuable employment readiness and career knowledge skills.

“Skills training can open doors and create pathways for people to thrive,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “The camp cook and catering program in Fort St. James will equip learners with skills that prepare them for employment. Our government is working hard to lift as we climb so everyone benefits from a strong economy. The future needs more skilled workers, I am proud of all the students who are helping to build the best B.C.”

The 16-week program walks students through both the theory and hands-on experience required to work as an entry-level camp cook.

Students receive a working knowledge of station set up, preparing food, cooking, clean up, stocking, and maintaining industry practices. The program also provides knowledge about important camp procedures such as scheduling, ordering, customer services, housekeeping and emergency procedures as well as training for Food Safe Level 1 certification.

“We’re thrilled to host this Camp Cook and Catering Program,” said CNC Nechako Regional Principal Troy Morin. “The interest level in culinary skills and training in the community has been steady.”

The program also focuses on developing career readiness skills such as resume and cover letters, interview and job search skills as well as earning their Super Host certificate. Also included as part of the programming the students will complete 60 hours of work experience to gain insight to what it is like working in the field.

“This grant is a huge benefit to the community of Fort St. James,” said Riley Willick, President of the Fort St. James Chamber of Commerce. “With the downturn in the forestry sector and local economy overall, this grant will assist some of us to transition to take advantage of the new opportunities that are appearing in our area. We have a tremendously capable workforce in Fort St. James and this grant allows us to invest in them as they move forward.”
